Why should I train, my drivers can already drive the damn truck?
Why should I train, my boss is already making a fortune out of me?
I hear it all the time,
Then there are the companies that do train all of their staff all of the time, that do have training budgets, because they know that fuel costs fall, insurance costs plummet, repairs and maintenance bills tumble, customer complaints become word of mouth advertisements and bottom lines stay black.
There are also drivers that take every opportunity they can to learn something new, that treat any course on offer as a chance to improve, to learn not just how things are done, but why.
My old dad taught me years ago that you can work with your back or work with your brain, the choice is yours, but one pays heaps more than the other. If you don?t learn how to do something you never will, if you don?t practice what you?ve learnt you?ll never be any good at it.
Wise man my dad.
?But I can?t afford to train?, you can?t afford not to, the opportunities you will miss, far out way the costs involved, the government knows this and subsidies are available for those who take the time to inquire. This is the very basis of a knowledge-based economy, if you invest, you will receive a return.
?But I don?t have the time to train?, that?s because you earn with your back. You have to make time over and above the call of duty, that?s your share of the investment. The returns are your greater growth, lower costs, more opportunities. The government?s return is a ?larger tax take? from a wider, more diverse, less unstable pie. Everyone wins.
?But, but, but.? You can but all day, the answer is still the same, the choice is yours, one pays heaps more than the other. If you don?t learn how to do something you never will, if you don?t practice what you?ve learnt you?ll never be any good at it and one day your back will wear out.
I played rugby league years ago, I watched my club squander its resources and invest nothing into the future generation of young players, and the premiers lived like kings, a club with a fine tradition of nurturing young talent faded into history.
Was it poor management? Yes.
Was it lack of strategic thinking? Yes.
Was it apathy on the part of rank and file members of the club to take personal responsibility for their own actions? Yes
Could it have been easily avoided? Yes.
Is the code poorer because of it? Absolutely.
The parallels with a large section of the NZ transport industry are obvious to all, for a number of years it?s been ?dog eat dog? and the need for the educational investment have long been neglected.
But we do have sound leadership and the strategic thinking has been in place for a number of years and there the parallel should end, as long as the attitude of each member of the industry takes responsibility for their own and others educational improvement, we will all be the stronger for it

Will it be easily avoided ?????
